Pen and Ink

This week's assignment was to explore different methods of using pen and ink, research artists that work exclusively with the medium, and hone our own talents. These are my first attempts at creating ink portraits, using references from the studio as well as my brother and his fiancé. Additionally, I've tried my hand at drawing things from observation along with creating a self-portrait.All completed on A3 paper in ink as well as bristle board.

looking into artists and their styles

When I began my experimentation with ink, I was inspired by two particular artists. the first was Edward Gorey, from whom I really enjoyed the "amphigory again" books with their lively, brief stories and intriguing characters. I also appreciated his short entertaining narratives and his meticulous crosshatching on otherwise very simple characters. The second is Jamie Hewlett, who is credited with creating all of the official Gorillaz's artwork. I love his strong character designs and distinct comic-book aesthetic. I find it very fascinating how he uses ink to create detailed features and strong, black shadows, as shown most prominently in his ink drawings of pine trees created while touring France. below are video flip throughs of the two books I took most inspiration from.

experimental techniques - 3D models

Our second assignment was to make 3D animal models using recycled materials. I ultimately used recycled cardboard and masking tape, then covered the entire figure with paint and paper mache.my main goal was to create silly cats, however I really enjoyed this task and ended up creating a paper mache mouse, shark and a low poly pigeon with random recycled materials I found around the studio. I am overall most happy with the black and white cat as he shows the most character. he also reminds me of an animal crossing villager. I wanted my main paper mache creations to have a fun and cartoon esc style so I edited them in photoshop to have silly cartoons floating around them.

I also wanted to experiment with placing my creations in different backgrounds and photographing them in different ways. my favourite of these is the water esc background I made for my shark, using a blue fabric and cling film

Stars in their plasticine eyes task

one of our tasks for the 3d models was to create a 3d plasticine model of an actor that has been randomly selected for us, my actor was Barbara Streisand, who I personally think looks uncannily similar to Adele.

looking into the red nose studio was extremely inspiring both throughout the process of creating my 3d models and looking back at the creation of my 3D plasticine creation, and I especially love the exaggerated and claymation esc style it has with bold and bright colours, and interesting textures.

Watercolour and Acrylic Art

Acrylic is something that I am already very familiar with and enjoy using regularly. Acrylics are a medium I have been using since my GCSEs, particularly in order to create big still life's and portraits. Watercolour is a medium that I am less familiar with and wanted to develop a better skill in.
