Conceptual Illustration

The article I have been given to create illustrations from. my brief is to create two illustrations, one as a feature illustration and one that will be a spot illustration.

Artist influences

Brad Holland
Brad Holland continues to be a huge influence for me. I am heavily inspired by his skill with acrylic paint and think his paintings for various articles are a great inspiration in this brief. his use of colour and texture in his painting are something I am very inspired by and would like to use in my final editorial designs if possible.

Maria Fouz

maria Fouz is a collage and editorial artist for magazines and newspapers, I really enjoy her collage style of mixed patterns and textures, that creates a rally unique final editorial and use of bright and vivid colours. I would really like some elements of this collage style in my final editorial.

looking into library books about editorial illustration

As someone who is an analogue artist, the book was a great guide in creating editorial illustration from both digital and analogue point of view. really diving into the steps that the artists took to crate a final finished artwork, including their whole process and inspirations.

for most of the thumbnails I really wanted to play around with the lighting, and bright colours.

exploring ideas and Pop Up Book Inspiration

Picture
Picture
I am really interested in the idea of pop up books, and layering paper in kind of a kids book style, and creating a more 3d textured artwork. I found some of these really layered paper artworks and thing they may look nice with the acrylic paint style I would;d like to go for.

Artist inspiration

Daria Aksenova is a papercraft artist whom I am very inspired by, especially wanting to create a more 3d artwork I really like how much detail there is in her art and how layered it is.

Initial mockup and experimentation of ideas

one of my initial ideas was to create an almost pop up book style feature illustration to then take into photoshop and edit. as much as I enjoy the idea I also think it is a little boring composition wise.

Re thinking my Idea

I wanted my illustrations to be more dynamic and interesting so I decided to go back to my notes and take the idea of books being a home and comfort. I re made some thumbnails and an initial mock-up of my idea. keeping in mind the idea of that childlike wonder and comfort books bought.

Taking inspiration from the idea of books being a sort of home and the idea of books as a hideaway and a comfort to her in her childhood.i wanted a more colourful colour palette, when I first painted the mockup, I thought the colours were a little too muted and dark, so I wanted my next attempt to still have the lighting as if were dark outside but also have those bright colours visible.

Editing and experimenting with the final design

I still think the final designs are a little too grunge in colours, and I would like to go back to the painting and maybe brighten up the colours and perhaps get rid of some of the texture of the paper that comes through.overall however, I am quite happy with the composition and I quite like the idea of the painting. I also quite like how the finals look in a mockup of a newspaper.

Spot Illustration design ideas

using photoshop to design a mockup of my final spot illustration. I would ideally like to use acrylic to make the actual spot illustration so that it better matches the feature however I also wanted to create an idea of what the painting will look like with colours and composition.
