Picture book for early readers

You are asked to provide 3 illustrated pages by way of 'proof of concept' for your book.

​You will need to consider and demonstrate the integration of image and type.
the story I chose for this brief is the modern update on rumplestiltskin.

RESEARCH 

THROUGH-media I choose to use
INTO- artist and book research 
FOR- my text and its contexts
Looking into a combination of digital and analogue, combining my use of acrylic and gouache and editing digitally. both are media I enjoy working with and would love to develop further

looking into typography with correlation to its image.
looking into the art of Clive hicks Jenkins and Lane Smith.

​both are incredible book and story illustrators whose interesting and whimsical art I found myself admiring as inspiration for this project.

Clive Hicks Jenkins 
Clive Hicks Jenkins is an artist whose art I greatly admire. I love the bright bold colours against the dark background and his way of creating texture in his art. there is almost a 3d paper craft look to his art which is something I find very interesting. His version of the story of Hansel and Gretel was also something I found very fitting for the brief I have chosen and thought it would be a great reference for making a more uniquely styled children's book. ​
Lane smith 
Lane smith is another artist who I am drawn to for his unique take on children's illustration books.
I also really enjoy the covers of his books, the illustration integrated perfectly into the title and has actually become a part of the illustration.

LAYOUTS

taking that idea of the straw being turned into gold was something I really wanted to show off in the front cover design. 
Experimenting with ideas for my front cover. 
looking into penguin book covers as inspiration- finding a book in the library about penguin book covers and their process of creation.

Changing Directions 

I decided to change direction with my idea and create something more dynamic and in my style, using gouche and ink, something I am more confident in as a medium.
